Panasonic VIERA TC-P42GT25 42-inch 1080p 3D Plasma HDTV
I have a THX, non-3D Panasonic plasma(2 years old); a Sony XBR non-LED LCD(4 years old); an occasional to mid-level Sony LCD (1 year old); Samsung's high of the road 3D plasma (current model), and a number of other smaller Samsung LCDs (1-2 years old); and a few of smaller Sharp LCDs (4-5 years old). Comparing plasma to LCD, a minimum of the older or non-LED/non-dimming, LCDs is like comparing apples to oranges. All of my LCDs have matte screens; they do not mirror a lot of ambient light-weight and work well in moderate to brightly lit rooms. the disadvantage is that the blacks simply are not terribly black. however to be honest, ninety fifth of the time, i do not even notice. The non-3D plasma performs well in dark rooms; fantastic blacks and distinction however suffers from ambient light-weight glare. If the scene is dark, the screen turns into a mirror. i take advantage of settings found on varied sites for specific models (CNET, AVS Forums, etc.). the sole deal breakers I've experienced are light-weight bleeding/flash lighting; where I exchanged my low-mid level Sony for one more and that i wasn't too happy concerning the reflections on my previous Panasonic plasma screen.
VIERA TC-P42GT25 Performance i am happy to report that the Panasonic GT's new anti-reflective coating is outstanding! It's still not nearly as good as a matte LCD screen however it's positively acceptable if you watch TV in an exceedingly moderately bright area. The reflections are but what I expertise with my Sony notebook screens. The glare from the frame/bezel on the opposite hand is worse than average attributable to the rounded contours. whereas on the bezel, note that it's bronze, not black. i favor it however some might not.
The 2nd image is great. The darks are dark and therefore the distinction is superb. i have been using the GT's built-in speakers for the time being and they are massive in any respect. i do not have any complaints however i am realistic concerning the laws of physics. Still, i'll use an external receiver and speakers after I have time to line it up.
3D Content 3D Blu-rays are expensive and therefore the choice is tiny. I actually have DirecTV however haven't tried their 3D content. Fortunately, already expensive video games do not seem to value additional if they are available in 3D. I scan Sony has fifty titles popping out in 2011 - therefore if you prefer games, you will be in for a treat.

I need help deciding, mostly dvds, ps3 games will be used, few blueray.
At 40 to 42 inches, you're right at the screen size where the difference between 720p and 1080p *might* make a difference. But the difference will be small. Some will tell you that the human eye can't see the difference at that size or smaller. Certainly that's true on smaller screens, and maybe for you it's also true at 40-42 inches.
A bigger concern is your use of PS3. The 1080p LCD only has a 60 hz refresh rate, and the response time is not stated in the specs, suggesting that it's rather poor. That indicates you'll have an annoying level of fast-motion blur on gaming or when watching sports. The plasma would be the better choice in that case--no blur at all.
