Why does it take so long for technology to be adopted by the masses?
For example, many of the technologies that became common in the past 15 years were actually much older.
High-definition television had been developed and demonstrated as early as the late 1960's by research labs, including a demonstration broadcast by NHK in Tokyo (look up Multiple sub-Nyquist sampling encoding for more details). But HDTVs did not hit the mass market in the US until around 1998, and TV did not switch to HDTV until 2009.
DVD players have been around since 1993, but they did not gain widespread adoption until the early 2000's.
The MP3 file standard was approved in 1991, but it took until 1998 before there was even a single MP3 player on the US market.
Why is this?
For almost 40 years, American televisions used broadcasting antennas that was not suited for HDTV broadcast. It took rulings from Congress to get things changed because many regional television stations could not afford to make the changes to their antennas. Some sort of agreement was made, and stations had about a year to make the changes. There still are a few stations that still broadcast without the new antennas, but they were very small stations to begin with.
DVD players: in 1993, the video tape was still king, and would remain that way until the disks shrank in size. The first ones were larger than a LP record!
