buying a new television?
I’m in the market for a new flat panel TV, around 42″. what i want to know, is what do i need to look for? What is the 720p and 1080p? what is a good screen resolution and delays?
anything i need to know, please let me know! I’ll be using the TV for one of the new game consoles: 360, PS3 or Wii.
720p means 720 horizontal lines in progressive scan while 1080p is 1080 horizontal lines in progressive scan.
Something like 1080i indicates 1080 horizontal lines in interlaced scan. The difference between progressive and interlaced:
In progressive, all lines are scanned at once to create one frame.
With interlaced, half the field is scanned at once followed by the other half to create one frame.
It would be to your benefit to stick with a set that supports 1080p in the size range indicated to reap the most benefits from 1080i and 1080p sources such as ATSC digital TV broadcasts and Blu-Ray Disc.
As for brands: Panasonic, Sony, Pioneer, Toshiba, or Sharp. Pretty much stay away from everyone else (ESPECIALLY no-name bargain brands, like Vizio). You may spend a little more, but you’re most likely to save in the long term in regards to service and repairs as the better brands tend to be built better. You usually do get what you pay for here.
And, DO NOT go by store displays to determine the TV’s performance as they are rarely configured properly to squeeze out every bit of performance that a TV set may be capable of.
