Till a few years back, it was just hard to imagine that the standard cathode ray tube (CRT) inbuilt within a TV would be replaced by liquid crystal displays (LCD). LCD has been around for a long period of time, there were certain inherent problems with them, like the refresh rate of the screen, that were creating problems for TV manufacturers to incorporate them into TVs. All of this has been changed with the technological efforts of worldwide electronic giants like Samsung who have changed the way people enjoy TVs with their Samsung LCD TV offerings.
The product range from the series of LCD TVs there were many variants in sizes and models that the discerning buyer can choose from. Gone are the days when one was satisfied with 21" displays. About a year or so back, Samsung displayed their latest LCD TV boasting of an 82" monitor. This is something that is just not possible with CRT displays and even if it were, the amount of power consumed by the same would not permit it to be user friendly. The next generation Samsung LCD TVs boast of ultra-definition resolution at 120 FPS (frames per second).
The effort put in helped the company to reduce the blur that viewers used to experience at 60Hz. The extra-large display screens only permits it to cover all viewing angles and the light weight of the LCD displays permit these TVs to be hung from the walls. In recent times Samsung LCD TVs boast of a RGB (red, green, blue) LED that raises true color saturation to 150%. According to the company, this is based on the NISC standard of 100%. Virtually thanks to mass production of LCD displays, the prices of these TVs have come down rapidly and nowadays there are models that are as cheap or are at times cheaper than what their CRT counterparts used to cost a few years ago.

• Earlier generation displays were more susceptible to screen burn-in and image retention, although most recent models have a pixel orbiter that moves the entire picture faster than is noticeable to the human eye, which reduces the effect of burn-in but does not prevent it.] However, turning off individual pixels does counteract screen burn-in on modern plasma displays.
• Earlier generation displays (2006 and prior) had phosphors that lost luminosity over time, resulting in gradual decline of absolute image brightness (newer models are less susceptible to this, having lifespans exceeding 100,000 hours, far longer than older CRT technology)
• Earlier generation (circa 2001 and earlier) models were susceptible to "large area flicker
• Heavier screen-door effect when compared to LCD or OLED based TVs
• Physical
• Generally do not come in smaller sizes than 37 inches
• Heavier than LCD due to the requirement of a glass screen to hold the gases
• Other
• Use more electricity, on average, than an LCD TV
• Do not work as well at high altitudes due to pressure differential between the gases inside the screen and the air pressure at altitude. It may cause a buzzing noise. Manufacturers rate their screens to indicate the altitude parameters.
• For those who wish to listen to AM radio, or are Amateur Radio operators (Hams) or Shortwave Listeners (SWL), the Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) from these devices can be irritating or disabling.
• Due to the strong infrared emissions inherent with the technology, standard IR repeater systems cannot be used in the viewing room. A more expensive "plasma compatible" sensor must be used.

Can a 50 inch Plasma TV be used as a computer monitor?
I am planning on buying a flat panel plasma TV, and I was also hoping to use it as my computer monitor. I am thinking of purchasing the Samsung LA50Q7HDX, which has a native resolution of 1024x768 and HDMI inputs. Having said that, I am looking to purchase a video card that has HDMI output (expensive). I am mainly concerned about display quality as I use the computer for both work and gaming.
Do I have to adjust the display to widescreen on the computer? Feel free to let me know what you guys think.
if your new plasma has a monitor input,ie vga or dvi plug,then you can connect your pc easily to it.you will need to find out what outputs your graphics card will have. most have s-video and dvi so these would be perfect to use for a connection. recommend dvi over s-video.once you have made the connection then look on your pc under appearence and themes,display,monitor and see if your plasma is available to select as a second monitor.or even better do it with your graphics card software.with nvidia you can have two monitor and ghost the picture to your plasma,all the adjustments can be made here to get the resolution,picture format etc sorted.

ps. you can also use s-video to scart on the plasma,but the quality will be poor on a large screen,and you will need scart addapters etc.
