What is An LCD TV?
Buying an LCD TV can be confusing. There are a lot of options out there. Aside from the obvious consideration of how the picture looks, it is important to consider features such as the contrast ratio, refresh rate, HDMI ports, and more. Here are some tips to help you determine which is the best TV for you.
LCD televisions generally come in two levels of picture quality known as "720p" and "1080p". A television that displays in 720p gives a high-definition picture with a clarity about halfway between standard definition and full HD. A 1080p set will provide the top resolution for HD programming and video. The 720p sets are cheaper, but can still provide a good picture if the television's other specs are of sufficient quality.
Contrast ratio is a ratio TV manufacturers use to describe how well a set displays colors in low-light or dark scenes. While listed contrast ratios are a matter of debate, in general the higher the number the better. A good minimum contrast ratio is 4,000:1. Anything less than that and the blacks and shadows on the set can look muddy or gray.
Refresh rate refers to how fast the picture frames are replayed. The more times the picture frame is replayed per second, the more less blurring. If measured in hertz (Hz), an acceptable refresh rate is 60 Hz. The higher the number, the better high-speed scenes will look on the set. For the best pictures to capture fast motion video (such as in video games) choose at set with a minimum of 120 Hz.
The latest LCD televisions use a special kind of backlighting known as LED. LED-LCD sets produce better pictures by providing deeper blacks, better contrast, and more vivid colors. These sets are more expensive than their non-LED counterparts but do provide a noticeably crisper picture.
HDMI ports are the connection points that you use to hook up HDMI cables to your TV. HDMI cables couple both high-definition picture and sound into one cable, reducing the cord clutter attached to your set. If all you are doing with your set is watching TV, two HDMI ports is probably fine. If you want to hook up a Blu-ray player, video game system, or other auxiliary devices, look for a set with at least three HDMI ports.
Price is obviously a big concern, but LCD sets are quite reasonable for their size. There are many large sets (40 inches or above) available for under $1,000, and a good 42-inch, 1080p set can be found for around $500. As mentioned earlier, LED-LCD sets will run a few hundred dollars higher.
So now you know the basics about LCD TVs. Carefully read the specs for the TV you are considering to ensure that you are getting the most for your money. Depending on the lighting of the store, some lesser-quality TVs can appear to have a good picture. If you rely on the specs, however, you can be sure that you are getting a good TV.
