All About USB TV Tuners
Not that long ago you could only enjoy High Definition TV (HDTV) on a HDTV capable TV or set top box.
PC's are perfect for anything digital so it wasn't too long before cards for your PCI connection in your computer became available. These tuner cards eliminated the need for an HDTV set and cables as they are installed in the computer's motherboard to allow for HDTV signal reception. The technology has advanced enough to allow you to plug a fairly advanced HDTV receiver into your USB port.
SASEM Co., Ltd., a South Korean company, were the first to launch an external USB HDTV dongle in December of 2004 called the OnAir USB HDTV.
OnAir is a software-decoding USB HDTV receiver that connects to the PC via a spare USB port.
You now not only have the ability to watch HDTV on your PC monitor but you are also able to record shows for later viewing in HDTV format. These units were first introduced to the American and Canadian markets in January 2004.
An evident advantage of using USB HDTV tuners is that it is very easy to install with PCs or laptops. With PCI you are only able to install them on a desktop computer that had a spare PCI or PCI-e socket available. Disassembling and reassembling the computer to plug in PCI tuner cards on motherboards is also risky.
With desktop PCs getting smaller inside there just might not be enough room inside the case to fit a PCI card. A cheaper card might also be prone to signal interference from inside the case as well.
Most USB TV tuners have support for 1920x1080 (ATSC) HDTV resolution. Maybe it's a bit gimmicky but you can also have the TV playing as your wallpaper.
Most USB TV tuners have an MPEG2 Encoder chip so you are able to convert a TV signal directly to DVD MPEG2 (720x480) so now you can watch your favorite TV show on the bus or train. Using DVD-RW it is easy for the user to create DVD titles for recorded live analog TV.

These days you don't even have to be sitting at your desk to control your USB TV tuner. Most USB TV tuner's come with a remote control.

How to record tv on a computer, but watch on an HDTV?
Hi. I want to be able to use my computer to record tv, BUT watch live tv and play back the recordings on my hdtv. Could you suggest a product (like a tv tuner card or something similar) that will do this? Like ideally it has some sort of button on the remote that you can use to choose to watch on the computer moniter or hdtv. Thanks
There r diff sol for this...
The simplest and most portable is using a external connector box that connects the TV to the PC.
eg Pinnacle Capture Card. This product is available as internal card for pc or as an external box
which acts as a junction between TV and PC.
note. But it records whats on the tv screen so u cant switch channels while recording
Some graphics cards / TV tuners provide recording capability
not sure of the products u just have to google for it..
Also playback is a diff issue.. if u want to playback on pc fine..
