someone help me out with these two simple problems?
1) there is a sale on a television. the original cost of it is $499.99. it is being sold for 20% off. what is the price of the television after the discount??
2) if i buy the television that costs $1999.99 at the mall, I must pay 8% sales tax. how much does the television cost after tax?
1. The fastest way is using cross multiplication:
Cost ------------------ Percentage
499.99$--------------- 100%
x ---------------- 20%
The original cost equals 100% of the cost. But they're asking you the original minus the 20% percent of that cost that is X.
Solve for X= 499.99 * 20 / 100 = 99.99$
Not take the original and subtract 99.99$ from it = 400.00$. And ther you have it, the price after the discount.
2. Also using cross multiplication, but this time, adding not subtracting:
Cost ------------------------ %
1999.99$ 100%
X 8%
X= 1999.99 * 8 / 100 = 159.99$
1999.99 + X = 2159.98$ cost with tax
