Freeview HD operates in UK after its successful launch and it is free-to-air services which are also known as DTV services. The services will be reaching all the regions by the end of 2012. Will my vcr continue to work after installing a digital-to-analog converter box?
Can I continue to use my vcr recording features after setting up my old tvs wth digital-to-analog converter boxes? I'm not thrilled at the prospect of having to buy new dtv's or dvr's to replace the perfectly good analog tv's and vcr's I already have. Frankly all this switchover nonsense seems like some kind of government-sanctioned money pit scam to me.
You can continue to use your old VCR with a converter box, but you will have to manually set the channel on the converter box to record digital channels. You can either daisy chain the signal: Antenna-Converter-VCR-TV or you can use two converter boxes so you can record one channel while watching another.
Technically it would be possible to build a converter that contained the timer-channel changer and the equivalent of a universal remote control. In other words, with such a box you would have the same functionality as you had before. The box would just send the VCR signals to start & stop recording at the correct times.
I don't know of any companies planing to make such a box. Since DVD recorders with digital tuners start at $145, I'm not sure there is enough of a market for such a converter-programmer.
